If a kid in India is asked the question, what is India? His answer might be in one of the below lines-
- India is the region from Kashmir in the north to Kanya Kumari in the south and Gujarat in the west to Arunachal Pradesh in the east.
- India is the combination of multiple languages, religions and cultures.
Above responses from a kid are very satisfactory. But, is it fully correct? If first statement is correct, then India is less then 75 years old. If second statement is correct, then the question is what is keeping this country together?
I thought about this question multiple times earlier. At some point, I even thought why should India be together at all? Below are the reasons I went through such thoughts.
- Many times people from one region look down at people from other regions in the same country.
- There is no easy way for people speaking one language to navigate in different region.
But, my opinion changed completely with more understanding and reading. The name India might be new, but the idea is not new. The current demography of the country is pretty new, but the idea of this demography is not new. To be more precise, this is not the first time India is united. It is united in 300BCE under Maurya's. It is united again under Gupta's and again under Mughal's. The region those dynasties rule might not be exactly as we see now. But, they ruled and influenced this exact region.
The way alphabets in different Indian languages are written might be different, but they represent the same sounds. All these scripts are originated from a common Brahmi script. Similarly, the way people from different regions of the country worship might be different, but they worship the same Gods.
In short, through the history. India is strongest and richest when it is together. Be it under Maurya's or Gupta's or Mughal's or in current form. Fall of Mughal's not just divided India, but put the whole country in slavery for long time.
This is not to belittle other great Indian empires like Marathas, Vijayanagara's, Chola's, Chalukya's, Ahom's and many others. But, only want to present my idea on the advantages of being together as single country.
