Arjuna: Krishna, if someone performs his tasks attentively. But won’t follow any defined practices. How should we see his acts? Which category does he belong to? Sath or Rajo or Tamo?
Krishna: Attention shown by a human towards the tasks they perform is again characterized as Sath, Rajo or Tamo.
Those who are bound to lust and pride, won't follow the defined practices and tortures themselves with extreme penance in the name of devotion belongs to Asura clan.
These attributes are also applicable to food, Yagna, Penance and even donations. People with Sath attributes like healthy, tasty, fresh food. People with Rajas attributes like extreme flavor, that cause thrust. People with Tamas attributes like flavor less, not fresh and banned food.
Tasks performed with no desire, devotion and scientific manner is a Sath task. Task performed with desire or to impress someone is Rajas task. Task performed without any rules and devotion is a Tamas task.
Respecting people who deserve it, having cleanliness, being simple and practicing nonviolence are bodily penances. Truth, caring, non troubling words and Vedic chants are penances via speech. Cheerfulness, calmness, silence, temperance and not having negative thoughts are penances for sole. Practicing these 3 penances with much attention but no desire for result will make it a Sath penance. Practicing them only for fame and extravaganza is Rajas penance. This Rajas penance will get no result. Practicing them with stubbornness and hurting their available resources is Tamas penance.
Donations performed as a duty without expecting anything in return is Sath donation. Donations performed either as an obligation or expecting result is Rajo donation. Donations performed without minding the circumstances, to undeserved and regret is Tamo donation.
